What is a bar-tack?

In sewing, a bar tack, also known as a bar-tack or bartack, is a series of stitches used to reinforce areas of a garment that may be subjected to stress or additional wear. These stitches are commonly seen in pocket openings, buttonholes, belt loops, the bottom of a fly opening, tucks, pleats, and the corners of collars. The purpose of the bar tack is to provide extra strength and durability to these vulnerable areas.
 
Bar tacks can be sewn either by hand or by machine. When sewing a bar tack, the process involves sewing several long, narrowly-spaced stitches along the line where the bar will be formed. These long stitches are then followed by short stitches made perpendicular to the long stitches, going through the fabric and over the bar. This technique helps create a strong and secure reinforcement.
 
The width of the bar tack commonly varies between 1⁄16 to 1⁄8 inch (1.6 to 3.2 mm), while the length ranges from 1⁄4 to 3⁄8 inch (6.4 to 9.5 mm). In some garments, such as jeans, the bar tack may be sewn in a contrasting color to add a decorative element.
